Points of Interest

I haven't had any cohesive thoughts in the last two weeks.  This causes difficulty when trying to come up with a blog topic that won't make me seem bipolar.  So, I thought instead that I would go with the flow, and talk about the randomness in my brain.  Therefore, I present to you... Points of Interest.

Point of Interest #1: The Year of the Book continues... and I finished this gem last night:

It was pretty awesome.  Awesome enough for me to stay up past my bedtime to finish it.  I love to sleep... so that's saying something.  It is a post-apocalyptic tale, involving a military experiment gone awry that leads to the end of the world as we know it.  I have to say I thought the jump from one time period to another that happens in the middle of the book was a bit jarring, but it works overall.  You basically learn the how/why of the coming apocalypse in Part I, and then jump 100 years forward to see the fallout in Part II.  The characters are rich, the story is exciting, and the ideas are original.  Stephen King's "The Stand" is one of my all time favorites, and if you also loved "The Stand", you will love "The Passage".  They have a lot of things in common - but not enough to make Stephen King mad, as evidenced by his glowing review. "The Passage" is the first of a coming trilogy - with the next book "The Twelve" set to be released in August 2012.  I highly recommend this one.

Next up - "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell".  I've been told to read this by a few peeps, and Amazon "suggests" it based upon my prior purchases.  Time to check it out.

Point of Interest #2: Horse Romance

Brad & Angelina, Scarlett & Rhett, Rachel & Ross... everyone loves a supercouple. Here in the Thoroughbred Capital of the World, we have our own version of the supercouple happening - Rachel Alexandra (2009 Horse of the Year) and Curlin (2007 & 2008 Horse of the Year).  These two champion racehorses have produced a foal!  This foal will either be the biggest thing to happen to racing since Secretariat, or be the biggest disappointment since Crystal Pepsi.  Whatever the outcome... it will be interesting to watch.

Point of Interest #3: Clusterf**kery

If I am ever on "Inside the Actor's Studio" and James Lipton asks me for my favorite curseword, I am going to say "clusterf**k".  I mention that not so that you can learn more about me and cursing... but so I can say that I believe that is the perfect word to describe our political climate right now.  We don't talk about politics on this blog, and I'm gonna guess that's one of the reasons you probably like this blog.  But it is HARD to ignore the massive clusterf**kery going on right now with the Republican primary and D.C. in general.  The older I get, the less I care about politics... but wow.  Get it together.

When I watch the news lately... any news... I find myself doing a version of the "Really!?! with Seth and Amy" skit from SNL Weekend Update.  Really, guys?  Really?!?  Let me just say... it is a sad, sad reality when a talking point is whether or not you believe in evolution, aka, SCIENCE.

The current Republican primary reminds me of the last season of "The West Wing" when Jimmy Smits and that guy from M.A.S.H competed for the Democratic nomination.  That ended well... of course.  Because it's "The West Wing" and that show rocked.  I have a feeling the Republican Convention won't end with camaraderie and confetti and a speech penned by Aaron Sorkin... but I bet it will involve more of the "c" word!!

Also... if Martin Sheen ran for President, I'd totally vote for him.  Sheen/Winfrey 2016.  Who's with me?
